Challenges Within the Construction Industry

Concrete is currently the most widely used building material in the construction industry in general. This fossil building material is 90% environmentally harmful within the construction industry. Its reformation and replacement also have a major impact on climate change as well. In my opinion, partial or total replacement of cement with natural binders and adhesives could make a big difference in the fight against environmental change. This step could reduce pollution by up to 50%. The best goal is to replace cement with binders that have a lower climate impact by optimizing concrete composition. These optimizations could make the concrete industry and construction more efficient, cost-effective, and cleaner as well.

Recent developments aim to produce concretes that are CO -neutral and benefit from carbon capture and storage. In the development of these new technological concrete materials, special consideration must be given to the various applications and the associated different physical loads and weathering effects on concrete. To this end, different concrete standards should be established for the various areas of concrete production and use.

Other environmentally friendly and recycled materials are available for the exterior protection of concrete structures as well for different kin of companies in this indrustry. For conventional fossil cement structures, environmental conditions themselves are an important factor, especially humidity, which is also changing with climate change. In addition, metallic concrete structures are also sensitive to climate change, so new corrosion protection methods must be developed, and the metal recycling sector has an important role to play.

On the "concrete reform" side, many companies are leading the way and are firmly pointing the way. One such company is Svensk Betong. In addition, they are trying to bring other alternatives into the field and thereby recycle the concrete materials that are already produced.
